Almost nothing in life or sport looks like that. Meanwhile the demands that actually break people down — holding a rigid trunk while carrying something heavy on one side, resisting a twist when a load shifts, staying tall under fatigue on a ruck — are never trained.
There's also an opportunity-cost argument. Ten minutes of crunches at the end of a session is ten minutes you could have spent on loaded carries, which train the trunk, grip, shoulders, hips, and aerobic system simultaneously. The classic ab routine isn't dangerous so much as it's inefficient. If your training time is limited to three or four sessions a week, inefficiency is the thing that quietly costs you the most.
One honest caveat: if you enjoy them and they don't hurt, a few sets of controlled flexion work aren't going to ruin you. But they should be the garnish, not the meal. The meal is anti-movement work under real load.
The Four Jobs of a Functional Core

That combination of intra-abdominal pressure plus muscular stiffness is what turns your trunk into a solid cylinder.
