Step-Ups, Split Squats, and the Single-Leg Strength That Carries You Up
Because every tie is a single-leg effort, bilateral lifts alone leave a gap. A strong back squat helps, but it lets your stronger leg quietly do more of the work. On the trail there's no hiding — the weaker side fatigues first, your stride gets shorter, and your pace collapses with it. The fix is to train each leg on its own, with enough load and height to make the real climb feel familiar.
The anchor exercise is the high step-up. Use a sturdy box or bench between 12 and 18 inches, drive through the whole foot on top, and stand fully tall without pushing off the back toe. Start with three sets of eight per leg at body weight, then add dumbbells or a weight vest as you progress. Going up is metabolic. Coming down is mechanical. On the descent, your quadriceps lengthen under load with every step to control your body weight dropping onto the next tie.
